Apprenticeship Information

Birmingham Electrical Training (BET) is a training provider for the electrical contracting industry in the West Midlands. We deliver a City & Guilds 5357 NVQ Level 3 Electrotechnical Technology Apprenticeships in partnership with local businesses who provide ‘on the job training’ and ‘off the job training’ is provided at our centre in Birmingham on a Day or Block Release basis.

The successful completion of our Apprenticeship will allow individuals to apply for their JIB grading as an Approved Electrician. The Apprenticeship we offer combines theory work and ‘on the job’ practical experience, which allows you to build experience and competency to become an Electrician. This is a high value apprenticeship, which can be difficult and demanding, but can lead to a successful career and higher education opportunities along with having a trade, which will be a valuable asset in the years to come.

If you are an applicant who is looking to undertake an electrical apprenticeship, school leaver, college student or electrician’s labourer, please complete the apprentice application form.

Once BET has received your application form, providing that you meet our entry requirements and are successful at this stage, we will arrange for you to attend our centre at a convenient time and carry out a basic skills diagnostic assessment. You will also need to present a colour blindness certificate (certain levels of colour blindness may render you ineligible for the electrical industry). If you are successful at this stage you will be invited to attend a meeting with our recruitment team, who will be able to answer any questions you may have, explain BET’s role and course in more detail and offer job searching advice and support including CV/Covering Letter advice.

Once you have completed the above process you will need to find employment with an electrical contractor. BET can assist you with this as we work with a number of local electrical contractors who are looking to take apprentices. However you need to be proactive in securing a job, as you must have employed status prior to commencing your apprenticeship with us. Entry Requirements

Due to the high value nature of the Advance Apprenticeship programme that we offer, candidates should hold GCSE Grades 4-9 or A*-C (or equivalent) in Mathematics and English.

Already Achieved Electrical Qualifications at college?

Have you completed one of the following Electrical Courses at College or another training provider, if so these can be mapped across into our City & Guilds 5357 apprenticeship.

Training within the Electrical Industry

The advanced apprenticeship lasts for four years (although previous experience and qualifications may reduce this). Training will be provided to enable completion of the NVQ Level 3 in Electrotechnical Installation. Training will also include the City & Guilds 5357 Electrotechnical Apprenticeship, this includes theory and practical exams. For candidates who have not obtained GCSE English & Maths at Grade 4 or Grade C (or above), candidates will need to undertake Functional Skills Level 2 in Mathematics & English, and, finally the industry’s own practical performance assessment, the AM2S End Point Assessment, which is taken towards the end of the fourth year. An example of the timescale for delivery of training is shown below.

Year 1

Complete Stage one NVQ Logbook (evidence derived from work activities and on site assessment, recorded in NVQ logbook), complete City & Guilds 5357 knowledge units, completion of any Functional Skills portfolio and external tests.

601 – Health & Safety
602 – Environmental Technologies
603 – Overseeing & Organising the work
604 – Planning & selection for an installation
609 – Electrical Principles

Year 2

Complete stage 2 NVQ Logbook (evidence derived from work activities and on site assessment, recorded in NVQ logbook), complete second year City & Guilds 5357 knowledge units leading to full Level Three Technical Certificate qualification.

705 – Preparation & Installation of Wiring and Equipment
606 – Termination & Connecting
609 – Electrical Principles

Year 3

Complete stage 3 NVQ logbook (evidence derived from work activities and on site assessment, recorded in NVQ logbook) and two final theory units.

607 – Inspection, Testing & Commissioning
608 – Diagnoses & Fault Correction

Year 4

On site work experience with employer, undertake AM2S End Point Assessment, NVQ Level 3 certificate gained.

On completion of the apprenticeship an application to the Joint Industry Board (JIB) for grading as an electrician can be applied for.
